About the Shelter

Our Dog Shelter is located on the edge of the Poligono Industrial La Pedrera, Benissa, off the N332 between Teulada and Benissa.

Set backing onto the woodland, the shelter has both night kennels and day play areas for up to 60 dogs. The covered entrance courtyard has facilities for our volunteers and dog walkers. The upper courtyard houses the veterinary standard clinic, isolation pens for new arrivals and our separate puppy pens that can hold two different puppy litters.

There are three marked dog routes around the shelter leading through the surrounding countryside. They vary from a short 20-minute walk to a longer, more scenic 40-minute option.

It is open to the public every day 09:30 – 16:00.

The AKIRA Shop

AKIRA’s shop is located on Avenido de Portet 19, Moraira and is open Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 13:00.

We also have a bookstall in Moraira’s Market on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fridays of the month, and a stall at the local Antique & Collectors Fairs.

We sell clothing and accessories, furniture, books, games, CDs and DVDs, a vast range of household items and bric-a-brac. Good-quality donations are welcomed.

Twice a year, we hold a seasonal Fashion Show to showcase quality items, often designer labels, at bargain prices.

The shop is also a bureau for tickets for fund-raising events, membership forms and general enquiries.  It is staffed entirely by volunteers, and if you can spare a few hours a week, your help would be invaluable.

HOW WE ARE RUN

We are a Spanish-registered Association and Protectora de Animales. We are governed by Spanish law, by our Statutes, and by our Members. For a copy of our Statutes please contact secretary@akira-animals.com.

Almost all the expenses of running our Shelter and caring for the dogs in our care are paid for by voluntary donations, sponsorship and fund-raising activities. Here are some of the ways that we raise money:

Charity Shop in Moraira, open Mon-Sat 09.30 – 13:00

Bookstall in Moraira market 2nd, 3rd and 4th Fridays every month

Fun events, e.g. Fashion Shows, Bollywood Nights, Concert under the Stars, and monthly Quiz Nights

We charge reasonable fees for dog adoptions, dogs surrendered to AKIRA by their owners, and found dogs returned to owner. These fees contribute to the veterinary costs of examination, micro-chipping, vaccinations and passports.

Benissa and Teulada Town Halls contribute to the costs of providing a collection service when dogs are found or handed to the local police.
